The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya is now open to devotees. Here is everything you need to know — darshan timings, how to reach, what to see, best hotels, and tips for a smooth pilgrimage visit.

Ram Mandir — A Dream Realised

On January 22, 2024, the Ram Mandir at Ram Janmabhoomi in Ayodhya was consecrated (prana pratishtha) in a ceremony that was watched by millions across India and the world. Built in the Nagara style of architecture, this grand temple sits on the exact site believed to be the birthplace of Lord Ram — one of the most sacred spots in all of Hinduism. For devotees, a visit here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For travellers, it is a profound encounter with living faith and extraordinary architecture.

Viraj Travels offers Varanasi–Ayodhya tour packages that combine both sacred cities in a single seamless journey. Here is everything you need to plan your visit.

  • By train: Several trains connect Varanasi (BSB) to Ayodhya Junction (AY) and Ayodhya Cantt (AYJN). Journey time: 3–5 hours depending on the train.

What to See in Ayodhya Beyond Ram Mandir

Ayodhya has been a pilgrimage city for centuries. While Ram Mandir is the centrepiece, there is much more to explore:

Hanuman Garhi Temple

A hilltop temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located just minutes from Ram Mandir. The 76 steps up to the temple are lined with devotees offering prayers. The view of Ayodhya from the top is beautiful.

Kanak Bhawan

A beautiful, ornately decorated temple said to have been gifted by Kaikeyi to Sita and Ram as a wedding present. The idol of Ram and Sita here is adorned with gold jewellery and is particularly stunning during festival seasons.

Saryu Ghat

The sacred Saryu river flows through Ayodhya, and the ghats here hold deep religious significance. The Saryu Aarti held at Ram ki Paidi Ghat every evening is modelled on Varanasi's Ganga Aarti and is beautiful in its own right. A peaceful walk along the ghats at sunrise is deeply calming.

Nageshwarnath Temple

One of Ayodhya's oldest temples, believed to have been established by Kush, the son of Ram. This Shiva temple is particularly significant as it is one of the few ancient temples in Ayodhya believed to have survived the medieval period intact.

Guptar Ghat

Believed to be the site where Lord Ram took jal samadhi (immersed himself in the Saryu to complete his earthly journey). A peaceful, less-crowded ghat with deep spiritual significance.

Best Time to Visit Ayodhya

October to March is the ideal time — the weather is pleasant, and major festivals like Ram Navami, Diwali (when Ayodhya lights 25 lakh diyas along the Saryu), and Vivah Panchami fall in this period. Avoid visiting during summer (April–June) as the heat can be intense.

Tips for a Smooth Ram Mandir Visit

  • Arrive early (before 7 AM) to avoid peak crowds
  • Mobile phones are not allowed inside the main sanctum — use the cloakroom
  • Wear traditional or simple clothing — avoid shorts and sleeveless tops
  • The queue management system is well-organised — follow the crowd channels
  • Book your Varanasi–Ayodhya cab with Viraj Travels for a 2-day package with overnight hotel stay
