First time in Varanasi? Don't get overwhelmed — here is a day-by-day 3-day itinerary designed by our local guides to help you experience the best of Kashi without missing anything important.

How to Spend 3 Days in Varanasi — A Local's Itinerary

Three days is the sweet spot for Varanasi — enough to absorb the depth of the city without feeling rushed, and without getting overwhelmed. Our local guides at Viraj Travels have spent years refining this itinerary for first-time visitors. Follow it, and you will see the best of Kashi, eat well, and leave with memories that last a lifetime.

Day 1: Arrival + First Ghat Walk + Ganga Aarti

Morning: Arrive and Check In

Reach Varanasi by train, flight, or bus. Check into your hotel. If you arrive before noon, rest briefly and then head for an early lunch at a rooftop restaurant with a ghat view — the food will be mediocre but the view will be spectacular. This first visual of the Ganges will set the mood for everything that follows.

Late Afternoon: Kashi Vishwanath Temple + Vishwanath Gali

Around 3 PM, head to the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. Deposit your phone at the counter (not allowed inside), join the queue, and take your darshan at the Jyotirlinga. The experience inside is brief but powerful. Afterwards, explore the lanes of Vishwanath Gali — these narrow, winding alleys are full of temples, flower sellers, incense shops, and the general magnificent chaos of old Kashi.

Evening: Dashashwamedh Ghat — Ganga Aarti

This is the highlight of Day 1 and possibly the highlight of the entire trip. Reach Dashashwamedh Ghat by 6 PM to secure a good spot on the steps, or better yet, board a boat from us for the river view. The aarti starts at approximately 7 PM and lasts 45 minutes. When it ends, do not rush away — sit for another 15 minutes and let the stillness settle in.

Night: Kachori Gali Dinner

End Day 1 with dinner in the old city lanes — chaat, kachori sabzi, and end with a Banarasi paan.

Day 2: Sunrise Boat Ride + Sarnath + Assi Ghat

Early Morning (5 AM): Sunrise Boat Ride

The alarm at 4:45 AM will feel brutal but this is non-negotiable. Our guide meets you at the ghat and your boat is waiting. As you glide slowly along the ghats at sunrise, watching the city perform its ancient morning rituals — priests chanting, pilgrims bathing, smoke rising from Manikarnika — you will understand why people return to Varanasi again and again.

The boat ride lasts about 90 minutes. If you want to stop at Manikarnika for a respectful observation (no photos), tell your guide.

Breakfast: Kachori Sabzi at Dawn

Return from the boat ride and walk directly to Kachori Gali before 8 AM. Fresh kachori sabzi with chai in a kulhad — this is the best breakfast in India.

Mid-Morning: Old City Walk

Your guide takes you through the famous Chowk area — past the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, Tulsi Manas Temple, and the ghats that most tourists miss. This 2-hour walk through narrow lanes, sudden temples, and chai shops is the best way to understand how Varanasi actually lives.

Afternoon: Sarnath

Sarnath is just 11 km from Varanasi centre — a 20-minute drive. This is where Gautama Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment, making it one of the four holiest places in Buddhism. The Dhamek Stupa (built in 500 CE) is magnificent. The Sarnath Museum houses the original Ashoka Lion Capital — the same image on India's national emblem. Spend 2–3 hours here.

Evening: Assi Ghat — Sunset and Chai

Return to Varanasi and head to Assi Ghat for sunset. This is the relaxed, intellectual, creative ghat — find a chai shop facing the river and simply sit. Watch the fishermen return, the students gathering, the evening puja. This is Banaras in its quieter, more thoughtful mode.

Day 3: Deeper Kashi + Departure

Early Morning: Subah-e-Banaras at Assi Ghat

One last morning ritual — the Subah-e-Banaras cultural programme at Assi Ghat from 5:30 AM. Classical music in the dawn air. A fitting farewell to Kashi.

Morning: Temple Circuit

Visit Durga Temple (Durga Kund), the striking red-painted temple from the 18th century. Then the Tulsi Manas Temple, where the Ramcharitmanas (Tulsidas's retelling of the Ramayana) was composed. If time permits, the Nepali Temple (a small version of Pashupatinath) near Lalita Ghat.

Late Morning: Blue Lassi + Markets

Before leaving, drink one last Banarasi lassi at the famous Blue Lassi shop near Vishwanath Gali. Then spend 30 minutes at the silk weaving shops of Varanasi — this city is famous for its Banarasi silk sarees and even if you don't buy, the craftsmanship is worth seeing.

Afternoon: Departure

Check out and depart. Most travellers at this point are already planning their next visit to Varanasi.

Practical Tips for Your 3-Day Visit

  • Stay in the Godowlia–Assi Ghat area for best access to everything
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes — the old city lanes have uneven stone floors
  • Carry a small amount of cash — many small vendors don't accept UPI
  • Book a local guide for at least Day 1 and Day 2 — Varanasi's depth is invisible without one
  • Best season: October to February (avoid monsoon for boat rides)
